North Country This Week
CANTON – There’s a new street in the Village of Canton.
At Wednesday night’s monthly meeting of the village board, a recently-acquired street conveyed to the village by St. Lawrence University located between the SeaComm Federal Credit Union and Walgreens off East Main Street will be named Thompson Court, recognizing the Thompson farm that occupied that area years ago.
The street is partially paved and is currently in use for Walgreens and SeaComm customers.
In November, the village board adopted a resolution that read “Said property shall become and be developed and used as a public street of the Village of Canton.”
Thompson Court will create a second entrance and exit from the new salt and sand storage facility to be constructed off Stiles Avenue.
In other matters Wednesday night, the village board accepted a letter of resignation from Canton Police Department Sgt. Basil Cheney, who will retire March 25, concluded a 31-year career in law enforcement.
Several agenda items, including a social media policy and the status of the former McDonald’s restaurant property at 64 Main Street will be discussed at a joint meeting of the town and village boards on Jan. 25.
