POTSDAM -- Residents of Potsdam and its surrounding communities are invited to join SUNY Potsdam students for a march through downtown as they show support and bring awareness to the issue of sexual violence and harassment on college campuses.
Since its inception in the 1970's, "Take Back the Night" events have helped inspire action and empower individuals as the marches give a collective voice to victims of physical assault and verbal attacks, event organizers say.
Students only will gather tonight (May 7) at 6 p.m. at the Minerva statue located near the Student Union on campus and will continue around the college and then downtown to Ives Park with a Potsdam Village Police escort.
Due to campus COVID restrictions community embers will not be able to start out with students on campus. Instead, community members are invited to meet the march at Ives Park at 6:30 pm and join in for a loop around downtown.
Speakers from Renewal House and SUNY Potsdam will have closing comments in the Gazebo. Masks are required and hand sanitizer will be available in the park.
