St. Lawrence County will expand Impaired Driver Program into Franklin County

CANTON -- St. Lawrence County will expand its Impaired Driver Program into neighboring Franklin County.

The class is court-ordered for people convicted of driving while intoxicated. They have to pay a fee to take the class, which funds it, Community Services Director Jay Ulrich told the board’s Services Committee at a meeting prior to the full board vote.

He told the committee of legislators that Franklin County contacted his office after the contractor they use to offer the class would be moving out of the area.

“We would be working with the DMV in Franklin County to get the referrals necessary to get the critical mass to get the group,” Ulrich told the committee, adding that there are now three people coming here from Franklin County to meet their court requirements.

The legislators also voted to create and fill an instructor position they will need to offer the class. Ulrich said the New York State DMV doesn’t allow the class to be offered remotely.

Ulrich said Citizens Advocates is letting the county use space in one of their buildings at no cost. He says it should fit about 14 to 16 people, with COVID-19 safety protocols in place.

The board took the action during their Monday, Oct. 5 meeting, which was streamed live on YouTube.
