CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public to be aware of a phone call scam that is going around the North Country.
Local residents have been receiving phone calls from individuals in California who are proclaiming to be Publishers Clearing House, officers said.
“These individuals are asking callers to purchase “vanilla” gift cards and provide activation codes to them in order to win prizes, deputies said. “The Sheriff’s Office advises citizens not to purchase these “vanilla” gift cards and to ignore the phone call. If there are any questions in regards to these fraudulent calls, contact law enforcement at 315-379-2222.
