SLC Arts announces 2022 grant recipients in St. Lawrence County

POTSDAM — SLC Arts recently announced its 2022 grant recipients from St. Lawrence County.

The organization distributes $84,000 annually to municipalities, libraries, 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and individual artists in the North Country.

2022 Individual Artist Grant:

• James Gonzalez, Potsdam, Project Title: Bike Rack Sculptures. The artist will create functional, public art, in the form of three bike rack sculptures in downtown Potsdam.

• Elizabeth Paige, Norfolk, Project Title: The Power of Paint. A collection of one large and six small murals, to be painted at local middle school. The large mural will be painted by the artist, and the small ones will be started by the artist and finished by the children.  The overarching theme is superheroes; children will be able to pose with the complete murals, which make them look like they have that given superpower.

2022 Arts Education Grant:

• Sara Lynch, Potsdam, Project Title: Science of Clay. A series of hands-on art lessons designed to bring physical science curriculum to life through, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County’s after school program at Parishville-Hopkinton Central School.

• Bill Newman, Canton, Project Title: Technical Theater - Scenery Design & Production. The artist will work with students from the Technical Theater class and theater program, to design and create backdrops for the school’s theatrical productions.  

• Patty VanPatten, Waddington, Project Set Tech: The artist will work with students, grades 8-12, instructing how to design and construct moveable sets and backdrops for the school’s theatrical productions.    

2022 Community Arts Grant:

• Adirondack Whiteout Weekend, Wanakena, Project Title: The Adirondack WhiteOut Weekend Brangbrolly Performance & Contra Dance.  A one-hour performance by the musical group Bangbrolly, and a 2.5 hour contra dance.

• Brantingham Arts Council, Brantingham, Project Title: 2022 Sizzling Summer Concert Series. A series of five summer lakeside concerts and a mystery theater performance.

• Chippewa Bay Community Club, Chippewa Bay, Project Title: Chippewa Bay Community Club Backyard Concert Series. A series of four, free July concerts in an outdoor setting.  

• The Edwards Arts Council, Edwards, Project Title: The Edwards Opera House Livestream Kickoff Event. A live and live-streamed performance by national touring artist Dar Williams.

• Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce, Massena, Project Title: 63rd Annual Concerts in the Park Series. A series of 12 family friendly concerts in an outdoor park setting.

• Len Mackey, Potsdam, Project Title: “Of a Creative Nature” - A Fusion of Movement, Music, Physical Theater & Soliloquy. A five-part series of creative performances and workshops that celebrate music, movement, story and dance, inspired by a variety of cultures.   

• Madrid Dam Music Series, Madrid, Project Title: 2022 Madrid Dam Music Series Program - You Can Come Home Again. A series of three concerts that bring touring and performing professionals with North Country roots back home to share their music and  story of their professional journeys.

• Morristown Gateway Museum, Morristown, Project Title: Morristown Gateway Museum - 2022 Arts Programs. A series of eight summer concerts, as well as an arts festival to celebrate & create visual art.

• Norwood Public Library, Norwood, Project Title: Arts Through Oceans. A series of five, free, hands-on, imaginative children’s art classes, by local artist Kris Rozelle. Classes offer 2D and 3D art projects that focus on different oceans, animals and cultures.  

• North Country Public Radio, Canton, Project Title: The underscore Project. A series of four live streamed, interactive video sessions, broadcast from NCPR, which include live performances and discussion with various local artists whose music is used for the station’s background music, during breaks, in news shows, and in other programs.

• The Yellow Barn Concert Series, Hammond | St. Lawrence County, Project Title: The Yellow Barn Concert Series 2022.  A series of seven diverse musical experiences that celebrate  the  power  of  music  to  elevate  the  human  spirit  and  bring  people  together  in community.

These projects are made possible with funds from the statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the state Council on the Arts, and administered by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council.
