The deadline for some villages to comply with federal election requirements has been extended in a bill supported by Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell of the 118th Assembly district.
The measure passed the Assembly Monday.
Villages which administer their elections independent of local election boards will be able to continue the use of their lever voting machines until December 2012.
The extension allows villages to determine if they will continue to hold elections separately, as well as whether or not they will purchase voting machines meeting the specifications of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).
If they choose, a village can allow the local board of elections to assume the responsibility for their elections.
This legislation will allow villages to decide how they wish to comply with the federal mandate.
Elections could be deemed void if not compliant with HAVA.
