NORWOOD – Construction is now underway to improve bus safety and expand parking at Norwood-Norfolk Central School.
When complete, buses will have a dedicated bus loop for student drop off and pick-up.
“The largest portion of this project involves replacing our front parking lot. We've had drainage issues for years, buckling pavement, and a congested bus drop-off/pick-up. Our new parking lot will address all these issues,” said Superintendent James Cruikshank.
“A dedicated loop for the buses may take parking spaces away, so we are capturing additional space along the highway and expanding the student parking,” he said.
Larger garage doors are being installed to allow adequate room for buses.
“The current size of the openings only allow for a few inches on either side of the mirrors to fit in,” said Cruikshank.
The outdoor projects are part of a $9.1 million capital project approved by voters in October, 2019. The tax levy did not increase, due to state reimbursement for capital projects, explained Cruikshank.
Other improvements that are part of the capital project include heating and air conditioning updates, changing remaining lights over to LEDs, auditorium seating, new fire alarm system, resurfacing the gym floors, and safety measures to the entrances and other areas.
