MORRISTOWN — Morristown is turning 200 this year. St. Lawrence County Legislators on June 7 took the opportunity to commemorate the event at the full board meeting.
A resolution passed by the county officials said Morristown was officially created March 27,1821 by the State Legislature from part of the town of Oswegatchie and the first town board meeting there was held April 10.
The town has been primarily a rural farmland area with a rich and varied history which once included a ferry to Brockville, Canada, railroads, gristmills, saw mills, tanneries and Indian Root pill factory, funeral homes, schools and marinas.
Legislator Joe Lightfoot, who represents Morristown on the county board, said he still has a tin from the Indian root “cure all” produced in Morristown.
He said the people of Morristown take great pride in their community and noted that the county honors its residents who bravely served in wars and conflicts faced by the nation and council members who contributed to its success.
“Morristown consists of the hamlets of Morristown, Edwardsville, and Brier Hill and the boundaries include the beautiful St. Lawrence River and scenic Black Lake,” the resolution says.
The resolution commemorating the town’s bicentennial was supported by all legislators present at the meeting.
Lightfoot said he intended to get a copy of the acknowledgement framed so he could present it to the town.
