MASSENA — Massena Police arrested the finance officer of Massena AMVETS on charges of third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony, police say.
Mark Phillips, 68, of Norfolk, was charged on June 24 following an internal investigation that showed Phillips allegedly embezzled $44,700 from AMVETS, according to Massena Police Chief Jason Olson.
According to officials, club officers started an internal audit in 2020 and found the funds were missing.
Massena police then arrested Phillips, who was arraigned in Massena Village Court and later released.
According to a 7 News report, AMVETS officials say the organization is still solvent and will survive the situation. Phillips was expelled from AMVETS, according to the report.
