CANTON — A 21-year-old was convicted by jury on drug charges Thursday, July 29 in St. Lawrence County Court.

Jay McKinney Jr. was convicted after trial for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (Class B felony), fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (Class D felony), and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia (Class A misdemeanor).

Sentencing is set for Sept. 21, said a press release from the St. Lawrence County District Attorney, Gary Pasqua.

The convictions carry a maximum sentence of 9 years in state prison, the district attorney said.

The charges stemmed from an incident on the night of March 28, 2020 when McKinney was found to possess more than 500 milligrams of cocaine and drug packaging materials consistent with sale of cocaine.

“The District Attorney’s Office does not tolerate the illegal possession or sale of narcotics in this County. We are pleased with the jury’s decision and will continue to rigorously prosecute individuals who profit from the sale of these dangerous substances that bring death and violent crime to our streets,” said District Attorney Pasqua.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force, Canton Police Department and the State Police Crime Lab all assisted with the case, said the district attorney.

Pasqua said he was proud of the hard work of his team, including Chief Assistant District Attorney Sara Charpentier, Assistant District Attorney Dominik Maida and the staff that supported them.
