CANTON – St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District (SLC SWCD) is looking for producers in the county that are interested in planting cover crops.
Priority will be given to producers that have not worked with the SLC SWCD in the past to implement cover crops and/or have not planted cover crops in the last three years.
Participating in SLC SWCD’s Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) Program is required and includes an on-site environmental evaluation by staff and the completion of a cover crop plan.
A reimbursement rate of $70/acre will be issued for up to 50 acres per farm that are selected and plant cover crops according to the plan provided. All land accepted for the program must be planted with row crops (corn, soybeans, vegetables, etc.) both this year and next year (2022 & 2023).
Cover crops must be planted by the seeding date provided in the plan to qualify for reimbursement.
If interested, call or email by one of the two deadlines: Aug. 12 for early fall season species, or Sept. 1 for later fall season species to allow time for site visits, planning, and the purchase of seeds.
Keep in mind, some cover crops may have an early plant-by date so the earlier growers contact SLC SWCD the better.
For more information, contact the SLC SWCD technician Jevonnah Foster at 315-386-3582 or email at jevonnah@slcswcd.org .
