OGDENSBURG – An inmate, serving his third stint in prison, assaulted and injured three officers at the medium security correctional facility on Tuesday, according to a New York State Corrections Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc. press release.

The release reports that initially, an officer assigned to one of the dorms observed the inmate exit the dorm bathroom. The inmate approached and stepped up onto the officer’s podium. The officer ordered the inmate to step down from the podium, which he refused to do. The inmate grabbed the officer’s legs with both arms. The officer activated her alarm and was able to kick the inmate off her.

Several uninvolved inmates approached and grabbed the inmate and pulled him away from the female officer. The inmate broke free from the other inmates and approached the podium again and grabbed the officer’s legs once more. The officer again struck the inmate in the chest with her foot. The inmates who attempted to help the officer, grabbed the combative inmate again and pulled him out into the recreation room.

A response team responded to the recreation room. The first officer attempted to apply handcuffs to the inmate. The inmate grabbed the officer around the legs and refused to let go of his grip. Two additional officers entered the room and attempted to get the inmate to release his grip on the legs of the first officer. Still combative, the inmate elbowed one of the officers in the mouth and kicked the second officer in the foot. The officers were able to get the inmate into handcuffs.

Once in handcuffs, the inmate became compliant.

The inmate was removed from the recreation room and placed in a cell pending disciplinary charges. He was interviewed by staff and admitted to smoking an unknown substance in the bathroom prior to the incident. He is serving a nine year sentence after being convicted in Suffolk County in 2015 for Burglary 2nd. He previously served time in prison for burglary and arson.

Three officers were injured in the attack. The first officer sustained pain and swelling to her arm and leg. The second officer who was elbowed in the mouth sustained a smaller laceration to his lip. The third officer sustained a minor injury to his toe. All three officers were treated by facility medical staff and remained on duty.
