HEUVELTON -- A juvenile is reportedly suspected of recent vandalism at Heuvelton Central School, according to district Superintendent Jesse Coburn.

Coburn issued a statement to district families Oct. 24 and said law enforcement informed him that the suspect had been identified and charges are pending.

"Because this is a police matter and the suspect is a juvenile, I am not able to comment further," he said.

State Police investigators, St. Lawrence County Sheriff detectives and Federal Postal Service Investigators were all investigating multiple break-ins in Heuvelton.

Aside from the school, vandalism was reported at Amvets Post 1997, the Post Office, and Doug's Tavern.

Police have not released information related to those incidents.

Superintendent Coburn addressed families who may have questions.

"While we cannot comment on the particulars of this situation, it’s important to remind students that acts of vandalism are a crime punishable by law and also violate the district’s code of conduct. Consequences for such behavior according to the code of conduct include suspension and/or expulsion," he said.

Any student upset by recent events who needs additional support, can reach out to the building principal who can connect a student with counseling staff.

"I want to thank the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and local New York State Troopers for their diligence in investigating this situation. As a district, we have strong relationships with both organizations, and I am grateful for their ongoing involvement in ensuring school safety," Coburn said.

Coburn said school safety would be a topic at Monday night’s Board of Education meeting, including a brief overview of the recent School Resource Office survey.

"I also want to thank our staff for their commitment to keeping school as “normal” as possible for students despite recent events. There is no doubt these incidents have left many people feeling unsettled. However, it’s important to remember that safety and security are always a top priority at Heuvelton. We have strategies and protocol in place to keep our school safe, and we are taking additional steps to make it even safer. Our greatest asset, however, is our staff; a team of caring professionals who are committed to understanding and meeting individual student needs every day," Coburn said.
