A heat advisory remains in effect for St. Lawrence County until 7 p.m. today with heat index values in the upper 90s expected, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Temps will be around 96 with heat index values of 99, forecasters say. There is a slight chance for a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Tonight the low will be around 72 with a 60% chance of thunderstorms, mainly after 10 p.m., the service says.

The high Saturday will be around 82 with a 70 percent chance of thunderstorms, NWS says.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, NWS says. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational

Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911 if medical assistance is needed.
