GOUVERNEUR — A Gouverneur man was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a felony) and other charges after a traffic stop on Grove Street by St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies Thursday, March 4.

During the traffic stop, the driver Michael J. Butterfield was found to possess more than 10 grams of methamphetamine, several glassine envelopes of fentanyl and multiple oxycodone pills, a press release from the sheriff’s department said.

Butterfield was also charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation (all misdemeanors); as well as, failure to keep right, improper left turn and failure to comply.

He was arraigned virtually by Judge Kopp of Piercefield Town Court and was held at the St. Lawrence County jail pending his next court date.
