GOUVERNEUR -- An inmate was charged Tuesday with the murder of a fellow inmate at Gouverneur Correctional Facility last spring, according to state police.

State police responded May 9, 2022, around 2:03 a.m.,to Gouverneur Correctional Facility, Irish Settlement Road, following a report of an unresponsive inmate within the correctional facility.

Inmate Londell A. Dyson, 32, Poughkeepsie, and inmate Hipolito Nunez, 30, New York City, were housed together in the Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU), police said.

Gouverneur Rescue Squad responded, life saving measures for Nunez were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased, officers said.

Following autopsy, Nunez’s death was ruled a homicide. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head with evidence of strangulation.

An investigation conducted by troopers, NYSDOCCS and St. Lawrence County District Attorney’s Office determined Dyson and Nunez were involved in a physical altercation resulting in Nunez’s death.

A grand jury in St. Lawrence County convened in February 2023 and Dyson was reportedly indicted for second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and second-degree assault.

Dyson remained in the custody of NYSDOCCS during the investigation.

He was brought to the state police station Canton on Monday, Feb. 27, where he was arrested, processed and arraigned in St. Lawrence County Court. Dyson was remanded to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility without bail.
