Former St. Lawrence Plaindealer editor joins North Country This Week news staff

North Country This Week is excited to welcome former St. Lawrence Plaindealer Editor Paul D. Mitchell to the newsroom staff.
Mitchell brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the paper and the community, having run the now-defunct St. Lawrence Plaindealer for 30-plus years. He was most recently employed as campaign coordinator for the St. Lawrence County Historical Association.
“I am looking forward to renewing professional relationships and providing our readers with concise and accurate reporting. North Country This Week and its website presence is second-to-none in St. Lawrence County and it’s exciting to become part of this experienced team,” said Mitchell.
A native of Ogdensburg, Mitchell is a graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland with a bachelor of arts degree in English. He is a long-time member of the Canton Chamber of Commerce board of directors and has participated in several community projects, most recently the refurbishing and reinstallation of the fountain in the Canton Village Park.

He and his wife Dawn reside in Canton.
North Country This Week News Editor Jimmy Lawton says the addition of Mitchell will help the paper provide better coverage, not only in Canton where he will be reporting on Canton town and village, but also in other communities.
“When the St. Lawrence Plaindealer and Ogdensburg Journal shuttered two years ago, North Country This Week worked to fill the void left behind in both communities. Adding Paul to our staff will help us further build on that goal,” said Lawton. “We’ll now be back to our pre-pandemic staffing of five reporter-editors in the newsroom, allowing us to improve coverage across the board.
Assistant editor Adam Atkinson has been covering Canton town and village as well as Potsdam town and village for the past year. Now that Mitchell is on board, Atkinson will be freed up to strengthen reporting in Potsdam, Lawton said.
