Feds dole out $145,000 to St. Lawrence County for emergency food and shelter programs

St. Lawrence County has been awarded federal funds for emergency food and shelter programs (EFSP) in the amounts of $35, 592 for Phase 39 and $110,006 for Phase ARPA-R, according to the United Way of Northern New York (UWNNY). 

United Way’s local board made up of representatives from St. Lawrence County Government, the American Red Cross, the United Way of Northern New York, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, St. Lawrence County Community Development Program, and other community representatives will determine how the funds awarded to St. Lawrence County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for reviewing applications and determining allocation of funds to applying agencies. 

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

• Be in St. Lawrence County

• Be private, voluntary non-profits or units of government

• Be eligible to receive Federal funds

• Have an accounting system

• Practice nondiscrimination,

• Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs

• If they are a private, voluntary organization they must have a voluntary board.
