Canton town supervisor makes board committee assignments

CANTON – Canton Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley made the board committee assignments at Wednesday night’s organizational meeting.

“Town governance requires a substantial amount of time of each board member. Committee work varies depending upon the needs of each department and issue at hand,” Ashley read.

“The purpose and role of Town Board committees is advisory only to provide support to departments, facilitate communication between departments and town board, and bring recommended items to the full board for consideration,” Ashley continued. 

She noted that the Deputy Supervisor has additional responsibilities beyond committee work. Councilman James T. Smith was appointed deputy supervisor on Wednesday night.

Committee reports are made at each monthly board meeting.

Board committees are as follows: (Note: “Blank” indicates the current vacant town board seat.

• Audit: Robert Santamoor and James Smith on odd months; John Taillon and Blank on even months

• Broadband: Taillon

• Municipal Building: Ashley and Taillon

• Code/Planning/Solar: Smith and Santamoor

• Economic Development: Santamoor and Blank

• Highway: Smith and Taillon

• Insurance: Ashley and Santamoor

• Justice: Ashley and Taillon

• Negotiations: As needed

• Policy: Ashley and Santamoor

• Recreation: Ashley and Taillon

• Shared Services: Ashley and Blank

• Sustainability (liaison): Santamoor

• Technology/Communications: Taillon and Blank

• Trails/Complete Streets (liaison): Blank

• Waterfront Advisory (liaison): Santamoor
