CANTON – Members of both the town and village boards on Wednesday night agreed to request a proposal from the engineering and land survey firm that assisted them in the formulation of a 2019 comprehensive plan to keep Canton on track in the plan’s direction.

At an August joint meeting, Deputy Mayor Carol Pynchon introduced the concept to create an oversight committee to handle the task to ensure the comprehensive plan is moving in the right direction.

On Wednesday night, Pynchon said she had contacted Jackie Hakes, the director of planning services for M.J. Engineering and Land Surveying, Clifton Park, to discuss hiring the firm to assist in the overview process.

“She was totally excited. This has real potential and have this expert input,” Pynchon said. “She said it will really help you stay on task and stay on direction and keep them informed in the community.”

The initial fee, said Pynchon, is in the $8,000 to $10,000 range to be split three ways - the village, town and village of Rensselaer Falls.

“They would be valuable as a resource facilitator who could recommend paths of potential funding sources and potential partners,” she added.

Pynchon said initial plans include an in-person meeting in January and the creation of an online matrix to allow residents to provide feedback. Mid year in 2023 the firm will begin gathering the public’s feedback and prepare a report for both boards.

Councilman James T. Smith said he was interested in hearing a proposal.

“It’s a good way to stay on top of the comprehensive plan and a good time to get the comprehensive plan back to where it’s supposed to be,” said Smith. It’s a good way to stay on top of something we’ve spent a lot of money on.”

Pynchon alluded to Rensselaer Falls’ interest in the oversight committee and their involvement in this process.

Councilman Robert Santamoor reported that he spoke with Rensselaer Falls Mayor Michael Hammond about the initiative.

“There is interest from Rensselaer Falls to be part of this,” he stated.
