CANTON -- St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies have charged two Canton men with theft of copper from Fort Drum after the pair were allegedly caught burning the metal to remove its coating before sale.
Deputies say a concerned citizen in Pyrites called them Oct. 14 complaining of open burning near the old rectory in Pyrites.
Joshua A. Pitts, 25, 7 Pink Schoolhouse Rd, and Robert P. Forsythe, 26, 800 Sykes Rd., were found by deputies burning long coils of copper wire in a wooded area near power lines.
The investigation by deputies found that the copper had been taken from Fort Drum, near Watertown.
Pitts and Forsythe have been charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of stolen property.
Environmental Conservation police responded to the scene to assist the deputies, and charged the pair with improper burning.
Pitts and Forsythe were given appearance tickets to appear in Canton Town Court.
