North Country Matters Presents: Conversation with Candidates kicks off on Oct. 5 and 6 with two conversations, the first with St. Lawrence County Clerk Gavin Regan of Potsdam, running to keep that position, and Cecily Morris, a candidate for St. Lawrence County Family Court Judge.

Regan sat down to discuss clerk issues with county citizens Robin McClellan, West Stockholm, and Jim O’Neill, DeKalb. The half hour show airs at 7 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6 on WCKN, Time Warner Channel 30.

Cecily Morris spoke with Sue Cypert, Canton, and Miles Manchester, Potsdam, to talk about the issues that face a family court judge. That half hour segment airs at 7:30 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 and 6 on WCKN.

More conversations will be taped the coming weeks, including several for Potsdam Village races. Each of the half-hour segments will be broadcast on a rotating basis through Election Day, Nov. 8, and be available on YouTube.

The civic partners for these conversations include AAUW-St. Lawrence County, the League of Women Voters of St. Lawrence County, the Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University, and Clarkson students in Comm. 310 and 327.

The conversations are an exercise in civic and civil engagement to restore our political process, which the partners believe has become dominated by big money, special interest organizations and the political parties that have swamped our system beneath a tidal wave of money, pressure, advertising, and political calculation designed to manipulate rather than inform voters.

Any candidate in a contested political office race in the North Country willing to abide by the rules of civility to discuss issues with fellow citizens is welcome to inquire about the five remaining open dates. Tapings are done on Friday mornings in the studios of WKCN at Clarkson University. Open dates include Oct. 21, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.

Interested candidates can contact Kathleen Stein of the League of Women Voters and AAUW at 386-3812 or kstein1@twcny.rr.com. Or you can contact Dan Dullea at the Center for Excellence in Communication at Clarkson University at 268-6428 or ded@clarkson.edu to get on the Conversations schedule. The remaining dates will be filled on a first-come basis.
