GOUVERNEUR — An Amish man was killed Sunday morning after a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 11 near Bristol Road, according to state police.
Troopers said they responded to a reported accident around 5:15 a.m and an investigation at the scene revealed that a horse-drawn Amish buggy occupied by 23-year-old Levi L. Swartzentruber Jr., and 20-year-old Mose L. Swartzentruber, both of Antwerp, was struck by a 2002 Ford Expedition operated by 36-year-old James R. Shuster Jr., of Brushton.
The horse was severely injured and was dispatched by law enforcement.
St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby responded to the scene and pronounced Levi L. Swartzentruber Jr. deceased, troopers said. Coroner Crosby authorized removal of his body from the scene.
Mose Swartzentruber was transported to Gouverneur Hospital by Gouverneur Rescue for leg and shoulder pain, officers said.
This crash remains under investigation.
State police were assisted by St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.
