Wetherell propels Saints nordic ski team to sixth at UVM

The St. Lawrence University men's and women's Nordic ski teams competed in the freestyle races at the 2011 UVM Carnival in Stowe, VT on Saturday. Graduate student Zach Wetherell recorded a season-best finish to lift the men's squad to sixth place overall.

Wetherell raced the men's 10K Free in 27:31.5 to finish in 13th place overall. The Hinsdale, MA native was awarded 30.0 points for his finish, as the team totaled 67.0 overall. Joining Wetherell in the scoring was junior Adam Terko, who was 28th, and senior captain Steven Vargo (33rd).

Sophomore Connor Hunt (41st), senior Kyle Marvinney (45th) and first-year student Eric Lustgarten (64th) also competed for the Scarlet and Brown in the men's race.

On the women's side, junior Leah Hart continued her consistent performances with a 15th place showing in the women's 5K Free. The Meredith, NH native paced her team with a time of 15:47.2 to pick up 27.0 points. Junior Caroline Carpenter and first-year student Amanda Moreland capped the team's scoring at 64.0 points, good for seventh overall. Carpenter was 23rd and Moreland followed in 35th.

St. Lawrence was also represented in the women's 5K Free by first-year student Amy Cymerman (55th), senior Sophie Allen (58th) and rookie Bridget Shea-Gander (67th).

The University of Vermont won the women's race with 136.0 total points, as Caitlin Patterson won the individual title for the Catamounts as well. Though Scott Patterson also won the men's race for UVM, it was Dartmouth College that claimed the team title with 130.0 points.

Both the St. Lawrence men's and women's Nordic squads will be in action next weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 11 and 12, at the 2011 Dartmouth Carnival.
