Union College junior center Kelly Zajac scored a pair of goals just under five minutes apart late in the second period, sending the seventh-ranked Dutchmen on their way to a 5-2 ECAC Hockey victory at Appleton Arena Saturday night, spoiling the Saints' Senior Night.

Union improves to 24-7-3 overall and is 16-3-1 in league play while the Saints drop to 10-17-5, 6-13-1 in their final home game of the season, losing on Senior Night for the first time since 1999, a streak in which they went 8-0-2 in the final home game of the regular season

"Union is an outstanding hockey team and both their record and their style of play show it," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "They played a very solid game and didn't give us a lot of good looks. They were very good both in their own zone and in the attacking zone and we had a couple of breakdowns that they took advantage of."

The Saints broke the scoring ice with 4:18 to go in the first period when junior Jacob Drewiske scored his sixth of the season on a ower play rush to the goal, but the lead lasted just 2:08 as Union took advantage of a turnover in the Saint defensive end to work a give-and-go with sophomore Wayne Simpson scoring his 13th of the year from his brother John at 17:50. Drewiske took the puck from defenseman George Hughes and went right up the middle, tucking the puck between Union goalie Keith Kinkaid and the post.

Union took control of the game in the second period, limiting St. Lawrence to six shots and scoring three goals of its own in the final 6:32 of the period. Sophmore Jeremy Welsh snapped the 1-1 tie with a power play goal, beating Saint goalie Matt Weninger low on the stick side on a rush up the middle for his 15th goal of the season. Zajac then scored his 11th and 12th of the year, finishing off a two-on-one with Adam Presizniuk at 14:33 and taking a pass from Matt Hatch to score from right in front with 54 seconds to play in period two.

Union made it a 5-1 game with 1:58 to play when Kyle Bodie finished off a rush into the Saint zone with his seventh of the year with his brother Mat earning the assist on the play. The goal came against Saint junior backup Joe Spadaccini, who took over for Weninger to start the third period.

The Saints cut it back to a three-goal final margin when Kyle Essery picked up a rebound of Greg Carey's shot off the post on a five-on-three power play and tucked it in for his fourth of the year with 13.1 seconds left in regulation time. Carey's initial shot, set up by Hughes, hit the crossbar and then Kinkaid and trickled along the goal line before Essery got to it and put it away.

Kinkaid finished with 25 saves for Union, 11 of them in the third period while Saint goalies Weninger and Spadaccini combined for 20 saves.
