Senior Betsy Lucas scored off a corner kick at the 78:04 mark of regulation to tie the game, but St. Lawrence University's women's soccer team couldn't find the go-ahead goal despite a number of great chances as St. Lawrence and Vassar played to a 1-1 double overtime tie in a Liberty League game on Sandy MacAllaster Field Saturday afternoon.

Vassar scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick 19:05 into play when a Vassar player was tripped up as Saint goalie Abby van Geldern tried to make a save in the Saint penalty area. Vassar freshman Kelsey Domb scored her sixth goal of the year on the penalty kick, beating van Geldern's dive with a shot just inside the far post.

Vassar outshot the Saints 10-8 in the first half, but the Saints started taking control midway through the second half and finally tied the score off a corner kick. Stephanie Sayward put the ball in play and after a header in front, it went to the top left of the 18-yard box where Lucas hit a hard shot which beat Vassar freshman goalie Lily Lanier cleanly. It was the first goal of the year for Lucas.

The Saints outshot Vassar 9-5 in the second half and 4-0 in each of two ten minute overtimes, but could not come up with the go-ahead goal. The Saints are now 5-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the Liberty League while Vassar is 6-3-1, 1-1-1.

"Although we started quite slowly in the first half, I am very pleased with the passion, determination and desire we showed in the second half and both overtimes," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "We created a lot of quality opportunities based on sheer will and it was unfortunate that they would not fall for us. Regardless of today's outcome, the performance this weekend was outstanding."

Saint rookie Mackenzie Collins set up two great scoring chances just prior to the Saint goal, but Sayward couldn't get a good shot off in the box on the first and Erika Gobielle put a shot just wide on the other. Elena Rogers was one on one with the goalie with eight seconds left, but chipped her shot just high, and Sayward had a trio of great chances in the overtimes but couldn't get one to go into the net.

Lanier finished with seven saves for the Brewers while van Geldern had nine for the Saints. SLU outshot Vassar 25-15 and had 10 corner kicks to four for the Brewers.
