One day after fellow St. Lawrence senior Ralph Temgoua recorded his 1,000th career point, Garrett Sharlow followed suit. The Massena, NY native was 7-of-11 from the field, totaling 14 points, becoming the 25th player in Saints men's basketball history to reach 1,000 career points in a 54-47 win over Elmira College in Elmira, NY on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints improve to 3-3 on the young season thanks to the play of Sharlow and Temgoua, who combined for 32 points while shooting 58% from the floor. Meanwhile, the Soaring Eagles remain winless (0-7) despite a game-high 22 point performance by Josh Keys.

Sophomore Janpeter Brase had a solid outing for the Scarlet and Brown as well, as he chipped in eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for head coach Chris Downs.

Elmira had the early momentum, as the home team raced out to an eight point lead six minutes into the first half on a three pointer by Kurt Dutcher. However, the Soaring Eagles would follow with a 7:30 point drought, allowing the Saints to take the lead at 18-17 with 6:29 left in the opening half. Though Elmira would close the half on a run to take a 26-22 lead into the locker room, St. Lawrence was well within striking distance despite shooting only 39%.

The Saints took advantage of some crucial misses by Elmira to build its largest lead midway through the second half. Sharlow, who had only two points in the first half, scored eight points in the first 8:00 minutes of the stanza to put St. Lawrence on top, including his 1,000th career point. Meanwhile, Temgoua followed with a lay-up and a three pointer on back-to-back possessions to give the Scarlet and Brown a nine-point cushion at 39-30 with 9:18 to play.

The two teams exchanged buckets until Elmira made a final run to pull to within four thanks to Keys, who buried a three with 3:32 to play, making the score 49-45 St. Lawrence. However, turnovers would plague the Soaring Eagles in the final minutes, allowing the visitors to celebrate a 54-47 non-conference win.

The Saints shot the ball better in the second half (44%) and closed with a 37-30 advantage in total rebounds. Temgoua had a team-high 18 points and three assists.

The victory closes the 2011 portion of the season for St. Lawrence, which will be in action again on Tuesday, January 3 against Brockport State at 6:00pm.
