The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-8 setback on Saturday against William Smith in Geneva, NY. Christine Abramo and Rosie Scheibel each had three goals for the Herons, while senior co-captain Kendall Harty scored three times for the Scarlet and Brown.

The loss moves the Saints to 4-3 (7-6 overall) in the Liberty League, currently outside the playoff standings one game behind RIT with only two conference games to play. Meanwhile, William Smith, which finished with a 38-29 advantage in shots and a 24-17 lead in ground balls, improves to 7-7 overall and 6-1 in league after winning on its "Senior Day."

St. Lawrence struggled throughout with turnovers and free-position shots. The Saints turned it over 20 times including 11 times in the first half to the Herons' two turnovers and finished with a 1-for-11 mark in free-positions.

The Saints dug themselves a tough hole in the first half, as they allowed William Smith to open a 5-0 lead midway through. The visitors finally got on the scoreboard with 6:35 left in the stanza with rookie Mackenzie Collins' 10th goal of the year and made it 5-2 when co-captain Lanni Piroli scored only 2:05 later.

However, William Smith halted the momentum with back-to-back goals to close the half to push the lead to 7-2 at intermission including a tally by Scheibel with under :04 seconds left. The Saints were unable to regain the momentum in the remainder of the game, as they would get no closer than five goals in the second half before falling 13-8.

Joining Harty, Collins and Piroli in the scoring for St. Lawrence on Saturday were Holly Noyes, Stephanie O'Rourke and Joey Kelley. Noyes, O'Rourke and Brigid Hurley each had assists in the loss.

Senior co-captain Paige Powell made 16 saves between the pipes in the loss including nine in the first half, while William Smith's Maggie McNair closed with 11 saves.

The Saints will look to earn a spot in the 2012 Liberty League Tournament next weekend as they close conference play against Vassar and Bard on April 27 and 28, respectively. RIT will square off with Union and William Smith.
