No. 5/6 Clarkson shut out the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team on Saturday night in Appleton Arena, 2-0, spoiling a celebratory day that saw the University officially dedicate the Appleton Arena renovations and induct two new Legends of Appleton in Peter McGeough '88 and Gina Kingsbury '04.

The Saints came out strong in the first period and outshot the visiting Golden Knights 8-6 through the opening 20 minutes, but Clarkson went into the break with a 1-0 lead on a goal from Devin Brosseau.

Brosseau buried a rebound from low in the slot after starting netminder Francis Boisvert made the initial stop on Clarkson's leading scorer Haralds Egle at the 15:13 mark.

Both goals on the night were even strength, as St. Lawrence managed to hold Clarkson's power play at bay, going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. But the Golden Knights extended their lead to 2-0 just 17 seconds after the Saints' second kill, when Nick Campoli put a shot over Boisvert's right shoulder, short side from a flat angle with 11 seconds remaining in the second period.

Boisvert finished with 23 saves in the loss, while Marotte stopped all 21 shots he faced en route to his and Clarkson's 20th win of the season.

David Jankowski returned from injury for St. Lawrence on Saturday night making his first appearance since the end of November and led the team with four blocked shots on the night and was 10-4 in the faceoff circle. Ted McGeen also returned from a lengthy injury absence.

Aleksi Peltonen finished with a team-best four shots on goal, including a partial breakaway that Marotte stopped with the blade of his skate to push it wide as the Helsinki, Finland native tried to tuck it in near side.

St. Lawrence pulled Boisvert with just under 2:00 to play in the third period, but put just one shot on goal.

As time wound down in regulation, Clarkson's Grant Cooper had a bid at the empty net, but Jake Stevens blocked it with his skates in the crease to keep the deficit at two goals.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 3-21-4 overall and are now 1-14-1 in ECAC Hockey. Clarkson improves to 20-6-2 and 13-3-0 to remain in sole possession of first place in the conference.

The Legends of Appleton program was launched by the University in the fall of 2017 to celebrate inductees for their play, commitment and impact on the St. Lawrence hockey programs and the hockey world.

Kingsbury and McGeough join Bill Torrey '57 and Brian McFarlane '55 and former Saints Head Coaches Paul Flanagan '80 and Mike McShane in the elite group.

Kingsbury, one of the most prolific scorers in University women's hockey history and a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team Canada, became the first woman inducted to the Legends of Appleton on Saturday night.

McGeough was the captain of the 1988 men's team that played in the national championship game in Lake Placid, New York, and All-ECAC First-Team selection as a senior as well as the Saints' MVP that same season.
