Roos topped by Elmira in women's lacrosse season-opener

(Elmira, N.Y.)- Senior Brittani Bessette (Canton, N.Y.) and freshman Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) each fired in two goals apiece in SUNY Canton’s season-opening 21-8 loss at Elmira College on Sunday.

Sophomore Tressa Goolden (Canton, N.Y.) added one goal and three assists for the Roos (0-1). Freshman Keeley Rice (Potsdam, N.Y.) contributed a goal and an assist, and sophomore Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, N.Y.) and junior Brooke Knight (Madrid, N.Y.) had one goal each. Freshman goalie Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn.) posted 10 saves and had a team-high six ground balls in her collegiate debut.

The Soaring Eagles scored the first three goals of the game before the Roos slashed the lead down to a single score following goals from Bessette and Carrol. Elmira answered with two straight, and then Carroll and Knight scored around another Elmira goal to close the game to a 6-4 advantage. Elmira closed the half with three straight tallies to lead 9-4 at the break. The Soaring Eagles controlled the play in the second half outscoring the Roos 12-4 to improve to 2-1 this season.

Moorea Spoljarick tossed in four goals to lead Elmira, and LeAnne Presler made four saves in the cage.

The Roos are back in action on Thursday, March 14 with a road game at SUNY Potsdam starting at 4 p.m.
