Kathleen Merchant shattered her own school record and moved into third place on the NCAA Division III performance list in the javelin to lead the St. Lawrence University women's outdoor track and field team at the Cortland Classic on Saturday afternoon at SUNY Cortland.

Caroline Driscoll also posted a top-20 national performance to win the steeplechase for the Saints.

Merchant, who had already broken the school record in the javelin twice in the first three outdoor meets of her collegiate career, shattered the record by nearly four meters with a mark of 43.51 on her second throw. She actually broke the record twice in her first two attempts, with her first throw of the day measuring 41.49 meters.

Caroline Driscoll dropped nine seconds off her personal-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 11 minutes, 16.49 seconds to win by nearly 25 seconds, the 15th-fastest time among NCAA Division III athletes this season. Catherine Kluchinski, who finished third, and Cassidy Scott, who was fourth, improved their All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championship qualifing times.

No team scores are being kept at the meet, which will conclude on Saturday.
