UTICA--For the second straight game, sophomore goalkeeper Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) played a large role for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, stopping seven shots as the Golden Knights' defense again stepped up to deny its opponent as the Green and Gold gained a 2-0 non-league victory over SUNYIT Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Knights moved to 6-2-1 overall and have the weekend off before returning to conference action at home against Union and Skidmore on October 8-9. SUNYIT had a four-game winning streak come to an end, as they dropped to 6-3.
The game was fairly even in the first half, except for junior David Maiorino's (Holbrook, NY) goal. For the second straight game, Maiorino produced the game-winner for the Golden Knights, scoring in the 17th minute of the contest as freshman Kurt Knolle (East Aurora, NY) provided the assist. Though the second half saw SUNYIT enjoy a 10-3 edge in shots, it was Clarkson that tallied another goal as junior Tobin Boomer (Louisville, KY) scored his second goal of the season on a cross from classmate Matt Konecnik (Waterford, NY), his first career point.
SUNYIT had a 16-8 lead in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kick opportunities, but for the second straight game the Clarkson defense was able to shut out its opponent.
