With a 2-2 tie against Colgate at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team extended its current unbeaten streak to six games, but the Golden Knights were in no mood to celebrate after letting an early lead slip away in ECAC Hockey play.

At 4-0-2 over its past six games, Clarkson has improved its record to 11-13-5 overall and stands in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with an 8-6-3 ECAC Hockey mark. The Knights battled second-ranked Cornell to a 3-3 draw in Potsdam on Friday night.

Freshmen Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) and Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) staked Clarkson to a 2-0 first-period lead, but Colgate (9-17-3, 6-10-2) battled back to earn the tie on the road.

Styner and Mercer finished off their chances in a strong first-period for the Golden Knights as Clarkson skated away with a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Styner collected her second goal of the weekend at 8:18 with a hard shot from the slot after a pass from junior Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK). Junior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) started the scoring play with a faceoff win at the right circle.

At 16:51, Mercer chipped in a rebound off a shot by senior Daris Tendler (Verwood, SASK) for her sixth goal of the year.

Colgate stayed in the game, however, when Jessica Hootz’s shot from the point found its way through traffic in front and into the back of the net at 17:29. Jessi Waters earned the assist.

The Raiders battled back to tie in the second period when Jocelyn Simpson won the puck during a scrum at the top of the crease during a power play and lifted in her sixth goal of the season at 5:14.

Clarkson outshot Colgate 22-18 over the final 25 minutes, but could not connect for the go ahead goal. The Knights were 0-of-4 on the power play and had the only man-advantage opportunity in overtime. The Raiders went 1-of-4 on the power play.

Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) made a career-high 38 saves for Clarkson, including 14 in the third period. Kimberly Sass finished with 39 stops for Colgate.

Clarkson plays its final regular season home games at Cheel Arena next weekend when the Knights host Harvard and Dartmouth.
