Opinion: Rupp voices support for St. Lawrence County clerk candidate

We are fortunate that Deputy County Clerk Sandy Santamoor has decided to run for county clerk. Sandy is a tireless worker who is dedicated to her job serving the public at the county clerk’s office. The county clerk position requires someone with a strong work ethic and who sincerely wants to help and serve the public.

There are many 12-15 hour days and giving up weekends to serve the public at events such as at the Massena Rod & Gun Club Show where we process pistol permit & passport applications, the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club Expo, senior fairs, veteran events and even at schools to process passport applications for students traveling abroad.

Whenever necessary Sandy comes in early, works through lunch and stays late to get the job done. She handles all of the civil filings at the clerk’s office, billing, leave time for all staff and she travels to the DMV offices to bring work and supplies when needed. She has excellent managerial skills and is well liked by all who work in the department. She has been to county clerk conferences where we meet to discuss issues that affect our county clerk and DMV offices.

She realizes the importance of budgeting and keeping expenses down while continuing the substantial increases in revenue that our department continues to bring to the county. We have accomplished much over the last several years and have continued to increase convenience and service to our customers.

At the county clerk’s office we now accept documents sent electronically so records such as deeds and mortgages can be e-recorded which is a benefit because it not only saves mailing costs or someone having to bring documents into the office but documents can be recorded & returned within minutes not days. We also now accept e-filed court documents and we accept credit cards as a means of payment in the clerk’s office.

We initiated a veterans discount ID card program for our veterans in St. Lawrence County in which local businesses offer a discount on goods or services all at no charge to the veteran for the card. Through our efforts in bringing awareness to the importance of organ donation in improving and saving lives, we’ve significantly increased the number of those registered to donate.

We’ve increased services at the DMV offices too by staying open through the lunch hours at the Ogdensburg and Gouverneur DMV offices and have extended hours at the Canton DMV office which is open 8-5 year round. We added a 3rd terminal at the Gouverneur DMV and are adding a 4th terminal at the Massena DMV to better serve our customers.

We’ve added 5 good union jobs while at the same time substantially increasing the net revenue that our department brings to the county which helps to keep our taxes down. We have a helpful and informative website, www.stlawco.org/departments/countyclerk where we provide much information as well as DMV and county clerk forms. With Sandy’s help we have accomplished much over the last several years and we will continue to provide exceptional service to the residents of St. Lawrence County.

It has been an honor for me to serve the residents of St. Lawrence County over the years and it has been very rewarding and humbling to be able to help so many individuals while in this position. Although I will certainly miss serving the public, I’m certain that Deputy County Clerk Sandy Santamoor will continue the positive progress that we have made.

We are lucky to have a hardworking and dedicated individual like Sandy running for county clerk. I strongly endorse her candidacy and if she is fortunate enough to be able to serve the residents of St. Lawrence County in this position, she will be a great county clerk. She has my full support!
