Opinion: Potsdam Snack Pack Program says thanks to all

Thank you to everyone who has ever donated their money, time, or talents to support the Potsdam Snack Pack Program. During the 2021-2022 school year we provided snacks and lunch items to more than 425 students each week, a twenty percent increase from the previous year. Our incredibly committed volunteers prepared a total of 14,720 snack packs for students from pre-K to the high school level.

We were extremely pleased to receive funds from the following businesses and organizations: A.A. Kingston National Junior Honor Society, Adirondack Park Paranormal Society, Boswell Construction, BPO Elks Lodge #2074, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Garden Place Estate, J.C. Merriman, Kendrew Grange, Liberty Utilities, New Hope Community Church, North Country Crusaders, North Country Savings Bank, Northern New York Community Foundation, Norwood Lake Association, NuMed for Children, Plumley Real Estate, Potsdam High School National Honor Society, Potsdam United Methodist Church, Raquette River Lions Club, Riverview Correctional Facility, Sandstone Dentistry, Sandstone Realty, SeaComm FCU, Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match Fund, The Bicknell Corporation and TJ Toyota Automotive.

Most of the organizations were repeat donors, but we also added seven new donors to the program! It truly takes “all of us” to ensure that the snack pack program can continue to serve some of the most vulnerable students in our community.

A special thank you to the educators, staff members and students from the Potsdam schools for always finding creative ways to raise funds for the program, whether it was a bake sale, dress down day, or collecting loose change, we appreciated their support.

In addition to cash donations, we also benefit from food drives held throughout the year. We received a combined total of 5,042 individual servings of various food items this school year. Thank you to the athletic departments of SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University, Potsdam Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), The UPS Store and Save-a-Lot, Dairy Queen, and SUNY Potsdam Department of Health.

We also welcomed back the very popular “packing parties” so other organizations can come in and prepare snack packs. This past school year we were pleased to welcome the SUNY Potsdam Men’s Basketball team (for the third time), the Clarkson University Theta Phi Alpha and Phi Sigma Sigma sororities, and New Hope Community Church “Service Sunday” participants.

All told, we had a total of 95 unique volunteers during the 2021-2022 school year. With so many organizations looking for quality volunteers we are grateful that people still choose to work with the snack pack program. Thank you again for caring and giving to the program. We could not provide this level of service without your ongoing support.
