Opinion: Hardiman seeking seat on Potsdam Town Board

To the Editor:

My name is Allyssa Theobald Hardiman, and I am running for a seat on the Potsdam Town Council. I am hoping to become more involved and more deeply ingrained in this community where I was born, raised, and have chosen to call home.

If elected, I look forward to participating in decisions for helping Potsdam to thrive. Potsdam has the potential to grow, but we must grow in a mindful way. Rather than paving the way for large chains and corporations, I seek to foster growth for small, local businesses who will stay in the area. I would like to partner with the local colleges in a larger capacity, as our student population is a valuable resource. Creating a safe, welcoming space for students will encourage more to become invested in our local community. As the future evolves into a more automated, “work from home” world, investing in broadband services will benefit business growth as well as the local colleges and public schools. The farms and foothills surrounding Potsdam make it a prime place to also invest in our recreational resources. I look forward to working with the Town and Village recreation teams to make Potsdam a place where people want to live and visit. Our beautiful, natural setting and small-town charm are what draws outsiders to Potsdam, and what distinguishes us from more metropolitan places like Plattsburgh or Watertown.

When you look at your ballot during early voting or on Election Day, you will find my name alongside my campaign partner, Lynn Hall, on the independent “Sensible People Party” line. I am proud to be campaigning on an independent line, as I believe the position of Town Councilman is one of service to our community, rather than for political gain. There are certainly more than two kinds of people, not just Republicans or Democrats. On this same note, I am looking forward to working with all members of the Board, and all the citizens of Potsdam to achieve the goal of building a better future for Potsdam. I believe I have the energy to help us reach that future.

Most importantly, and regardless of who you choose, please take the time between now and November 2 to vote. Real change begins at the local level, and this is the time when we can make a difference.

Thank you so much.
