Opinion: Candidate for Canton Town Clerk says full-time deputy clerk needed

To the Editor:

During the September 30th budget work session, after less than a year in her position as town clerk, Mrs. Blackburn suggested that the deputy town clerk position be reduced to a part time position for the 2022 budget.

I feel the 2021 year has not been indicative of a “normal” workflow. Between extended COVID-19 shutdowns and part-time summer hours of the Town Clerk’s office, Canton residents were denied customary access to purchase licenses, pay their taxes, or conduct other necessary town business.

For over 30 years the Town of Canton has had a full-time deputy town clerk. During my three years of service as Deputy Town Clerk, the level of customer traffic in the office was unpredictable at any given time. Having two people available to serve customers at all times ensured that their needs were met. We were able to maintain a high level of customer service to prevent the loss of business and revenue for the town.

As a normal step in the budget process, there will be a public hearing that has tentatively been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021.

If you feel this reduction of service will affect you as a Canton citizen, please consider coming to the public hearing and let your voice be heard.

Thank you for your consideration.
