CANTON — A group of North Country students were recognized by SUNY Canton Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Courtney B. Bish during the conclusion of the spring 2022 semester.

"There's nothing that brings me more joy than notifying students they have won these awards," Bish said. "Among the students recognized here are trailblazers, philanthropists, leaders, and scholars of the highest order. These students have received glowing nominations from their peers, their faculty, and administrative staff who have recognized the excellent work they have done on our campus and in their communities."

The Student Specialty Awards are presented annually to those who have defied the odds, overcome challenges, persevered through hardships, showed tremendous leadership, engaged in philanthropic or humanitarian efforts, and inspired their peers.

Among the area students to earn awards are:

• Jonah R. Black, a SUNY Canton Forensic Criminology major from Canton, earned the Leaders of Tomorrow award.

• Patrick J. Dubuque, a SUNY Canton Agribusiness Management major from Chase Mills, earned the Spirit of Success award.

• Kylee M. Donnelly, a SUNY Canton undeclared major from Massena, earned the Pillars of Character award.

• Diane M. Shearer, a SUNY Canton Health Care Management major from Massena, earned the Humanitarian and Leaders of Tomorrow awards.

• Brooke E. Ayers, a SUNY Canton Criminal Investigation major from Potsdam, earned the Humanitarian award.

• Johanna L. Velasquez-Garcia, a SUNY Canton Applied Psychology major from Rensselaer Falls, earned the Phoenix award.
