POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will host a free concert featuring guest artist Haim Avitsur on trombone Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Snell Music Theater.

The concert will kick off with Antonin Vivaldi's "Sonata No. 1 in B-Flat Major," and Johann Sebastian Bach's "Suite No. 1 in G-Major for Cello," translated for trombone by Avitsur and Robert Cuckson.

Avitsur will then present "Deux Danses" by J.A. Defay, followed by the premiere of Inessa Zaretsky's "Black Mountain."

The performance will conclude with an improvisation for solo trombone by Enrique Crespo and a rendition of "The Blue Bells of Scotland" by Arthur Pryor.

Haim Avitsur has premiered over 80 new pieces encompassing a broad range of styles from solo trombone to chamber music and orchestra.

Avitsur is a trombone professor at West Chester University School of Music in West Chester, Penn. and at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, CUNY.

From 2004 to 2007, Avitsur was on the faculty of the University of Virginia and he was the principal trombonist of the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra.

In 2005, he founded the Summer Trombone Workshop, which has a U.S. residency at Temple University in Ambler, Penn. In the summers of 2007 and 2008, the Summer Trombone Workshop had a second residency in Taiwan. The workshop had its first winter residency in 2009 at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.

Avitsur is a clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company.

Avitsur was the only trombonist named a 2005 and 2007 emerging artist by Symphony Magazine.
