Northern Symphonic Winds concert at SUNY Potsdam Sunday

POTSDAM – The Northern Symphonic Winds, conducted by Brian Doyle, will perform a concert on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 pm in Hosmer Hall, SUNY Potsdam.

The group’s brass section will open the program with the “wildly swinging” Jazzalogue No.1 by Joseph Turrin.

Members of the woodwind section join the brass for Hill Song No. 2, by Percy Grainger.

Clarinet Raphael Sanders takes the stage as soloist in Brooklyn Bridge, written in 2005 by young composer Michael Daugherty. Sanders is an Associate Professor of Clarinet at the Crane School of Music.

The second half of the program opens with the popular and passionate Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. The music, which includes “Mambo,” “The Rumble,” “Somewhere,” and “Cool,” evokes vivid images of the iconic American composer Leonard Bernstein’s 1957 production of West Side Story on Broadway.

The concert will conclude with the “frothily inventive” Spin Cycle, written just 10 years ago by another young American composer, Scott Lindroth.

NSW has donated concert proceeds to worthy causes in its communities and has hosted benefits for numerous local organizations.

There is no admission charge; donations will be accepted at the door to support future Northern Symphonic winds projects.
