Fireworks and festivities for the Fourth in St. Lawrence County

Fireworks, parades and field days events are planned to celebrate Independence Day this year. Many communities are hosting events to commemorate July 4 this year.

Gouverneur

The Gouverneur Fire Company’s annual 4th of July fireworks celebration will be held at the Gouverneur & St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds, 85 E. Barney St. from 4-11 p.m.The fireworks display in Gouverneur is always up close and personal.

The company is celebrating 141 years of service to the community with what it claims to be the biggest fireworks display in the North Country. The fairgrounds were sold out at the event last year and the department says it has made numerous improvements to accommodate more people this year.

There is a donation charge at the gate to enter.

The event is sponsored by Casablanca Restaurant, RM Conklin Agency, Superior Plus Energy Services, Newvine's NAPA and NY Pizzeria.

Hannawa Falls

Fireworks over Hannawa Falls. The 35th Robert Plumb Memorial Fireworks display by Majestic Fireworks will start in Postwood Park off the beach in Hannawa Falls at dusk Saturday, July 6.

The display will be able to be seen from along State Highway 56.

Donations can be made at Chip’s Place, 5863 SH 56 or Jake’s on the Water, 5726 SH 56.

Colton

A Children’s July 4th Parade will be held Thursday from 10-11 a.m. on Cottage Road from Arbuckle Pond to Gulf Road. Children (of all ages) dress in patriotic garb and march the 1-mile route to celebrate our Nation's Independence Day.

Cars and Trucks should avoid Cottage Road during the march.

Norwood

Fire trucks and rescue vehicles, classic cars, and floats will step off at 1 p.m. in Norwood for the Norwood Fire Department’s annual parade on July 4. Various local fire departments are expected to participate, along with parade floats and school bands.

Parade marchers will take the usual route down Maple Street, and travel down Lake Shore Drive, onto Spring, cross over to Bicknell Street, then to Fireman’s Field on Morgan Street.

Following the parade, drivers in the demolition derby will start their engines at 3 p.m., drawing local competitors from around northern New York.

There will be carnival games, food, and rides at firemen's field.

The annual fireworks display will launch at dusk.

Morristown

The Morristown Central School Green Rockets Marching Band is expected to be the first band in the Steve Spilman Memorial Parade on Thursday, July 4, starting at 10 a.m. on Main Street. School marching bands from Ogdensburg, Heuvelton, Lisbon are also expected to perform, while fire and rescue departments from Brier Hill, Hammond and other local departments march along the route. Floats featuring local businesses, organizations and clubs will be joined by others from as far away as Ontario and Oswego.

More festivities will follow after the parade at the fire station including a chicken barbecue ($12 per dinner), the annual antique tractor pulls, children’s games, games of chance and a 50/50 raffle.

A food concession stand will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, French fries, bread dough, snow cones, ice cold drinks and cotton candy.

Massena

The St. Lawrence Centre mall will host its annual Independence Day Fireworks Community Festival on Saturday, July 6, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The celebration of Independence Day will feature vendors, carnival games, live music by Saving Dave and Merryweather, a show by Tragically Hip tribute band Fully Completely Hip and of course fireworks.

All of the events are free and open to the public except the Fully Completely Hip concert. Many activities will be held outside depending on weather.

The vendor show and carnival games begin at 10 a.m.

The band Saving Dave will perform at 11 a.m.

A petting zoo will be set up from noon-4 p.m.

The band Lone Wolf and the Spaghetti Corner Band will play at 1:30 p.m.

Nine different bounce houses will be set up from 2-8 p.m.

Merryweather will perform at 4.

Full Completely Hip will play at 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for the concert and can be purchased online at https://bit.ly/2WN40dr.

Fireworks begin around dusk.

Cranberry Lake

Local camp owners with frontage along Cranberry Lake in southern St. Lawrence County are expected to launch fireworks there again this year on July 4.

Boat owners and beach goers are welcome to the community to enjoy the free display, which sees dozens of residents launching their contributions to the fiery light show from their docks.
