CANTON -- The Town of Canton Board of Assessment Review will be hearing resident's complaints over property tax assessments this year while still complying with the state's social distancing orders during the pandemic.

The Board Assessment Review will meet Tuesday, May 26, from 4-8 p.m. at the municipal building to hear and examine all complaints in relation to assessments, upon the application of any person believing themselves to be aggrieved.

Due to the governor's orders regarding COVID-19 precautions, social distancing and wearing of masks will be abided by everyone in attendance at the grievance hearing, said an announcement on the town website. Those without masks will be provided one.

Property owners need to make an appointment to attend grievance day by calling 315-386-2595 by May 25 to schedule a time.

Canton Town Assessor Cindy Brand has completed the tentative assessment roll for the current year, said a statement on the town website. A copy of the roll has been filed with the Canton Town Clerk at the municipal building, 60 Main St., where it can be viewed by the public until the fourth Tuesday in May.

The tentative assessment roll can also be viewed on the town website at cantonny.gov and the county website at www.stlawco.org.

The assessor, or a designee, will be available with the tentative roll by phone at the municipal building, at 315-386-2595, during the following times by appointment:

• Monday May 11, 8 a.m.–12 p.m.

• Thursday May 14, 4-8 p.m.

• Saturday May 16, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

• Wednesday May 18, 12-4 p.m.

Town residents are advised to frequently check the town website at cantonny.gov for any unforeseen changes or information regarding Grievance Day.

A publication containing procedures for contesting an assessment is available at the assessor's office or online at www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/contest/contestasmt.htm.
