CANTON -- Investigators are looking into a power outage at the Corning Advanced Optics Facility in Canton that resulted in heat-related injuries to three workers there Sunday morning
Two of the employees were taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and one to Canton-Potsdam Hospital. One was hospitalized overnight, and now all three have been treated and released, according to Corning Inc. spokesman Joe Dunning.
Dunning said a power outage at the plant early Sunday morning did not result in a fire.
“There was no fire at the facility,” Dunning said in an email response. “The facility sustained a power outage, which stopped the exhaust systems at the glass melting furnaces. As a result, higher than normal heat radiated from the furnaces.”
The power outage is being investigated by Corning officials, National Grid, and first responders, he said.
Rensselaer Falls Fire Chief Dallas Denny said the call came into their firehouse at 6:15 a.m. Sunday to Corning’s plant at 334 Co. Rd. 16, Canton. They stood by while Corning employees attended to the incident, he said.
There was “no material damage to the facility. The facility is operational,” Dunning said.
DeKalb and Richville fire departments were also at the scene, along with the Ogdensburg Fire Department hazmat team.
