OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg’s council aims to help restaurants get up and running by allowing them to use city-owned property near their buildings for outside dining space.
With outside dining now permitted under the most recent guidelines issued by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the council approved on Monday a resolution should allow most restaurants to return to serving at some capacity.
In an interview Tuesday morning Deputy Mayor John Rishe said the goal is to help out the local restaurants that were forced to shut down due to COVID-19.
“The resolution is for 90 days, but I think it’s something we want to look into for the long term,” he said.
Rishe said he’d like to see restaurants keep more outdoor dining, which he says is common in many communities. He said it allows people to see something going on in the city.
Rishe said he would also like to see the city modify its open container law, which has traditionally been strictly enforced outside of Ogdensburg bars.
Rishe said he’s hoping to bring a proposal to modify it at the next city council meeting. He said the changes would be beneficial to the restaurants, but also to the city as a whole.
