POTSDAM – North Country Neighbors, 6 Main St., recently reopened under new owners.
Jackie and Troy Matthie purchased the business for Tim and Cathy Connelly in mid-June, after the business had been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Connelly’s have owned the business since 2002.
“They were looking to sell,” said Jackie Matthie, owner of 2nd Chance Auctions in Massena since 2017. “And I have always wanted to operate an antique/thrift shop. The timing was right for all of us.”
Matthie, a nurse by trade, has taken over the shop, located in the basement of the Prosh building on Main Street. She has made a few changes but the shop still retains its eclectic character.
The counter is moved to the opposite wall and includes hanging plexiglass and hand sanitizer on the counter, as required by current regulations. And signs in the windows, clearly state that masks are required.
“We have had six new members join,” Matthie said, “bringing the total to 40.”
The shop contains something for everyone. From new stock to antiques. There are booths with vintage clothes and gently used modern and dress clothing; jewelry, collectibles, housewares, books, comics, magazines, furniture, small appliances, home décor, and so much more.
Matthie has a few plans for the future, but they are still up in the air. While she looks forward to a time when masks aren’t required, she still has people coming in the shop looking for those special treasures.
“The people are just great,” she said. “They come in, look around and have a lot of fun.”
The shop is open five days a week, Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information check out the facebook page at North Country Neighbors, or call the shop at 315-268-1055.
