MASSENA — Wendy’s is now closed.

Wendy's was one of the original businesses when the mall opened in 1990. The announcement of the closure was made on the St. Lawrence Centre Facebook page Monday.

Mickey's Place, which serves baked goods, soups, sandwiches, and fair food, remains open at the mall, Anita Burrito serves Mexican food inside the mall during the winter and outside in a food truck during the summer. The All American Pub, currently closed due to the pandemic, is a full-service restaurant and sports bar. None of the eateries are listed on the St. Lawrence Centre website; Wendy's is still listed as the only restaurant.

The mall has lost many businesses and restaurants in recent years as retail outlets across the nation have felt the crunch from online sales. To combat the issue the mall now offers a variety of entertainment and shopping options.

"Before COVID we were on track to filling the mall back up. We were at 80% occupied up from the 28% when I first started. We were making a wonderful community space and having events that were bringing up to 10,000 people in the doors in a day," said mall Manager Erica Leonard.

"Now, we can't have events, we can't open some of our entertainment, and most of the businesses have closed down because they couldn't make it. Not because our rent prices are high (which is popular belief) but because no one was buying anything. We work with anyone that wants to be there and we can help with a marketing plan and a business plan to get off the ground and in some cases offer free first months rent to help them get open."
