The unemployment rate in St. Lawrence County crept up a tenth of a point in October to 9.5 percent, still the highest in the state outside of New York City.
But while the county saw a small increase in the rate of unemployment, neighboring counties saw a larger increase.
The rate for September in St. Lawrence County was 9.4 percent. In October 2009, it stood at 9.0 percent.
In comparison, in neighboring Franklin County, unemployment jumped from 7.7 percent in September to 8.1 percent in October; in Jefferson County, October’s rate was 8.8 percent, up from 8.2 percent in September.
The unemployment rate throughout the state in October was 9.0 percent. The rate for the U.S. as a whole stood at 8.0 percent in October.
These figures, from the state Department of Labor, are not seasonally adjusted.
