POTSDAM – A third person is upset to be on a list of St. Lawrence County officials that the Stefanik for Congress campaign released of people they said endorsed the Republican representative for re-election.

Potsdam Town Clerk Cindy Goliber ordinarily does not endorse political candidates, even those in her own Republican Party, so she said she has had second thoughts about her inclusion on the list

“I typically do not endorse people because I am town clerk and I serve all the people, no matter what party,” she said.

Goliber explained how her name got on the list of 84 public officials released by the Stefanik campaign Friday.

“Her office called, and I had a line of customers at my window. My deputy was at lunch, so I just said ‘okay,’” she said.

“I’m an elected representative so it doesn’t dismay me I was on the list,” she said. “But because I don’t endorse people I was kind of upset . I thought about calling back, but I didn’t, so that’s that.”

The list is undergoing extra scrutiny because since it was released on Friday, two people on it said they told the Stefanik campaign they were not supporting her for re-election.

Norwood Village Trustee Mike Zagrobelny and Potsdam Town Supervisor Rollin Beattie were both on the list, but both have said they told those who called from Stefanik’s office that it was a mistake to have included them.

“I never endorsed her,” Zagrobelny said Friday night.

“I didn’t endorse her either,” said Beattie Saturday morning.

Zagrobelny said he has since spoken with members of the Stefanik campaign team and told them he wants a public apology.

“When I called the campaign office to complain, they said they were shocked, and that it must have been a clerical error,” Zagrobelny said.

He said he has asked for a personal apology, which he has not received, he said Monday.

But the campaign office released a statement apologizing for the errors.

"The campaign apologizes for the oversight, and has publicly updated its website" to reflect the change in the number to 82 "top Republican, Democrat and Independent St. Lawrence County officials (who) have endorsed Elise Stefanik, not 84," said Lenny Alcivar, a member of the Elise for Congress campaign, which is working for the re-election of Stefanik, R-Willsboro, in the North Country's 21st District.

The Republican congresswoman faces two challengers in the race, Democrat Mike Derrick of Peru, and Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello of Glens Falls.
