CANTON -- Renovations to the Cole Reading Room at St. Lawrence University’s Herring-Cole have restored it to a quiet study space and enhanced original woodwork in the historic building.
Donations from alumni Jay and Valerie Ireland helped fund the refinished woodwork as well as new lighting, carpet and reading tables and chairs. Ireland is president and CEO of GE Africa.
Dan Seaman, chief facilities officer for St. Lawrence, said the room opened for students this fall.
“The Irelands wanted to see it restored back to a quiet study area,” Seaman said. “We removed a lot of casework that had been added over the years, and we moved some of the bookshelves back to their original location.”
Herring-Cole has been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1974. A dedication will take place this fall.
