MASSENA -- There will be a free naloxone training on Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. at the Massena Community Center, 61 Beach St.
All participants will be trained in spotting and responding to an opiate or opioid overdose.
This confidential event is open to the public and registration is not necessary.
It will be sponsored by Dr. Sally White of the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and the Comrades of Hope.
No medical knowledge is needed and training is less than one hour. Participants will receive a naloxone nasal spray kit, which blocks the brain from receiving only opiates. Naloxone is a nasal spray that can reverse the effects of an opiate or opioid overdose. It is sometimes marketed under the name brand Narcan.
“Our HOPE (Heroin/Opiate Prevention Education) is to prevent fatal overdoses; everyone's life matters and recovery is possible. Naloxone can be a step to entering into the recovery process; a fatal overdose cannot,” according to an event announcement from Comrades of Hope.
Event sponsors say they urge the public to attend. The training is not limited to Massena residents.
The kits are obtained from a grant through OASAS and are distributed without a fee to participants.
“Please know that if you are suffering from the effects of addiction, you are not alone,” the announcement says.
Comrades of Hope is support group for loved ones of addicts, whether the addict is currently using or deceased. They meet on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Massena Community Center at 6 p.m. April meetings are on the 12th and 26th.
